Mary Shiels Hospital was established in 1947.  It was founded on the belief that through a total commitment to quality care, innovative services and specialization, Mary Shiels Hospital could reach and maintain a high level of excellence in delivering healthcare services.

Mary Shiels Hospital is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

JCAHO evaluates and accredits more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. An independent, not-for-profit organization, JCAHO is the nation's pre-eminent standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Since 1951 JCAHO has maintained standards that focus on improving the quality and safety of the care health care organizations provide. The JCAHO's comprehensive accreditation process evaluates Mary Shiels Hospital’s compliance with these standards and other requirements.

JCAHO accreditation is recognized internationally as a symbol of quality and reflects an organization's commitment to meeting performance standards. To earn and maintain the JCAHO's Gold Seal of Approval, Mary Shiels Hospital undergoes an unannounced, on-site survey by a JCAHO survey team at least every three years.
